Following the series of meetings that took place in April, Suzhou's Dushu Lake once again shines in the life science realm. On June 23rd and 24th, the SIP BioBay, along with ChinaBio and EBD Group, held the 2010 Bio-nano Cooperation Forum. The forum attracted over 600 participants, nearly 300 companies and institutions from 20 countries, and is undoubtedly the largest biomedical international forum held in China.
The forum aims to provide cooperation opportunities for bio-pharmaceutical companies around the world. The governments of 20 countries, including: the USA, Israel, Britain, Australia, Belgium, and Italy will send delegations of domestic enterprises to attend. World-renowned pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, local Chinese bio-pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies; universities, research institutions and investment companies will also be participating. Companies that will attend the forum include Pfizer, Bayer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Lilly, Boehringer Ingelheim, Novartis and other internationally renowned pharma giants; medical device companies; Balloch, Waugh pulse German capital, Fidelity Investments, Morningside Ventures and other well-known international investment funds; McKinsey, WSGR, Morrison & Foerster, eighth day of peace and morality, vPro, Han Fei and other famous law and consulting firms.
The two-day forum includes one on one cooperation meetings, presentations of the findings of Chinese researchers and bio-tech companies, presentations of the pharmaceutical giants' "wish list", and executive seminars. The areas covered include new drug R&D, CRO services, pharmaceutical R&D outsourcing, and CMO pharmaceutical manufacturing services outsourcing.
Today, creating new drugs through R&D and technical cooperation between companies and institutions have become a new trend in the pharmaceutical industry. In the past 20 years, almost all new drugs were created through collaboration and all major pharmaceutical companies have set up technical cooperation departments. China is rapidly becoming the center of global pharmaceutical research and development, and is attracting the world's leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. These companies are all looking for possible cooperation opportunities to help them better integrate China's preponderant resources. Thus, cooperation is rapidly becoming an important part of China's biomedical industry. According to statistics, the number of cooperation transactions increased by 41% in 2009, among which the fastest growing part was the co-development deal.
This Bio-nano Cooperation Forum is the first of its series in the biomedical field in China, and the SIP BioBay, which has been ranked as one of the top three biomedical parks in China, has become the second to co-host a forum from the series after the Zhangjiang Park in Shanghai.
Currently, there are already over 160 high-tech enterprises homed in the SIP BioBay. They cover all kinds of fields in biomedicine, including drug development, CRO R&D outsourcing services, diagnostic reagents, and medical equipment. The park also has a complete gene technology industry value chain, making it the domestic Industrial Park with the most complete industry chain and the highest concentration. The BioBay has more than 200 experienced entrepreneurs and scientists who had returned from abroad, and among the 2000 R&D staff in the park, more than half have a master's degree. In just three years, the rapid rise of the SIP BioBay has become a best representation of the rapid development of China's biomedical industry.
ChinaBio Founder and CEO Greg Scott said, China has the world's most rapidly developing pharmaceutical market and is now gradually becoming an internationally recognized leader in biotechnology innovation. With its large numbers of skilled and innovative scientists, the Government's strong support and a unique low-cost, high-quality development system, China clearly has a surefire plan for global success. Currently, we are very pleased to host the second Partnering Forum here. Suzhou is emerging as a new star city in the realm life sciences technology. The founder of life science Cold Spring Harbor rests here, and we hope to further expand our achievements in this city.
