China surpassed United States in bioethanol patent applications and commercialization

Columbus, Ohio (June, 24, 2010) – Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the world's leading authority on chemical information recently disclosed in their report that in 2009 China’s bioethanol patent production has now transcended other countries to emerge as the global leader in the commercial production of bioethanol.
In the recent CAS Chemical Research Report, it was shown that after 40 years of development in the bio-fuel industry the United States still maintains its position as the avant-garde of publishing bioethanol research literature. However, China has now matured into the world leader in creating bioethanol patents. Additional key information in the report is:
•The United States in 2009 published 105 first and second-generation bioethanol research journals, which far exceeds any other country.
•In the same year, The People's Republic of China Intellectual Property Office issued a total of 156 bioethanol related patents.
•In the first decade of the 21st century, second-generation bioethanol (from non-food materials, such as wheat straw) saw an increase of 486% in literature produced, and 23.41 times as many patent documents were produced in comparison with the 1990's.
•Information about the gradual progression from first generation (consumption of raw materials) to now the third generation (from algae) of bioethanol.
•Focus in the bioethanol research industry has now been concentrated on the third-generation or algae-based bioethanol.
"The world now focuses on the second-generation of bioethanol products, where there is a ever increasing interest in developing a sustainable, cheaper and more environmentally friendly fuel." said Christine McCue, the vice president of marketing for CAS.
